Head Start Programs:

Head Start serves low-income and/or disadvantaged children providing Early Childhood Intervention, Parental Involvement, Education , Health, Nutrition, and Disability Services. The program is available in four communities, serving five school districts in center-based classes. Home-based programs are available in Newark Valley and Waverly/Owego. The program:

  • provides a variety of learning experiences
  • provides transportation for eligible children
  • provides nourishing meals and snacks
  • responds to children with disabilities
  • assists families with medical and dental care
  • focuses on safety and health

Center programs are 4 or 5 days a week with different length of days in different sites. All center programs serve breakfast and lunch and for full day programs, an afternoon snack is also provided.

The Home based program provides the same services as the center programs except that the home visitor visits the home of each family weekly where she assists the parents in teaching their own children. The home based program is for income eligible families of preschool children, usually three year olds., works with the child, and helps the entire family attain needed health and social services.

Twice a month, the home based children and their parents gather for a socialization time in the classroom for a three hour program.

Parents Are the Heart of Head Start

Head Start believes that parents are a child's first and most influential teachers. There are many opportunities for parental involvement including:

  • Classroom volunteers
  • Joining fieldtrips and mealtimes
  • Participating in Policy Council (the decision making body for Head Start)
  • Training and workshops on topics of your choosing

Children leave Head Start prepared for Kindergarten, excited about learning, confident in their own abilities, and ready to succeed!
